SWS Feedback Form

i was in overflow, so not a perfect review. things i noticed:

    1) DRUMS. highhat mic on the drum is too high in volume. drums sounded more like drum hardware than a complete kit. also, the highhat high EQ was too emphasized without enough mid body, so that it the sound broke consistently. also, the other mics were not in balance, so the rest of the toms really were pretty inaudible.

    2) SUB. the sub sounded like it wasnt on or barely audible to fill in the low range. (i am not a bass thumper by any means either)

    3) GUITARS. Acoustic needed to have changed EQ to fill the role that it was playing in the band. On the whole, it was too emphasized in the high range so it sounded air-ey. While highs should be emphasized in general on acoustic b/c its a rhythm instrument, it was too much. And when it was a guitar only, there was no midrange or low adjustment so that the melody carried through. Second electric guitar was inaudible, and I was wondering if it should've been mixed in since Strats and Les Paul's have different sound signatures for various songs.

  2. I was sitting front center, first row in the main auditorium. Things I noticed:

There is a low freq feedback throughout the service. I didn't notice it as much during the praise time but definitely notice it at the end ot the service when P. Ed was praying.

Similar to Thomas and what he said about drums. It sounds very harsh and overall high, and the drums basically overpowered all the other instruments, at least from where I'm sitting.

I think the vocals sounds weak compare to the instruments, it's a little difficult to follow James from time to time.

I was able to hear all the instruments well from where I was sitting, but I think because the drums sounds high, it overpowers the rest of the instruments. I'm not sure if we have feedback issues with the low freq but that could explain why we turn the lows down.

  3. good comments. i have some responses:
    1. for drums: we use compressors to kill low volume sound. maybe fix the attack/release
    2. we boost drums in the main auditorium b/c it doesn't carry well over the line into the overflow. maybe separate more audio channels in the overflow next year
    3. the bass in the overflow is poor b/c of the sub we use in there as well as the general acoustics. i'm going to be using a new sub in there in the fall most likely. but remember, it's still a gym so the bass can make it pretty muddy as well.

  4. 1- Ditto on the drums; can't hear the rest of the instruments, esp. the keys/strings (though this gets better by the 2nd song).

2- Re: Jackson's comment re: the low frequency throughout the service, we also heard a buzzing noise at the beginning of prayer meeting, which we temporary fixed by having the main auditorium turn up their gains and lowering ours in the overflow. Could these two issues have been related?

3- This isn't related to the mixing, but I was controlling the sound in the overflow, and the MAIN R channel has a strange clicking noise that would start up now and then. Whenever I would catch it, I would center the L channel and kill the R, but there's probably a better and more permanent solution to this. What could be the issue?

  5. the right clicking noise may be a result of Chris Gilling's application or it could be blue thunder. we need to troubleshoot this some more. too bad that was our last overflow service for a while.
